Boots & Sneakers

This is the wider floor. Boots sit next to sneakers here because most men own both and wear them in the same week, not because the two are interchangeable. What you are choosing between is how much structure you want under your foot on a given day.

The boot side runs lace-up, chukka, chelsea, wingtip, moc toe, logger and hiker, in leather, suede, nubuck, roughout, waxed and cordovan. A hiker gives you a padded collar and a lug sole that bites on wet ground. A logger runs a raised heel that keeps your arch off a ladder rung. A wingtip puts a brogued seam across the toe and down the quarters, which is decoration with a working origin.

The sneaker side is the low, quiet option. Less shaft, less weight, a softer sole underfoot. You lose the ankle support and you gain a shoe you can put on without thinking about it.

Colors here cover tobacco, cognac, mocha, olive, grey, natural, tan, brown and black. A dark pair hides its wear. A natural or tan pair shows every one of its first six months on the toe box and the outside edge, which some men want and others cannot stand.

Buy for the ground you actually walk on. If that is pavement most days, weight matters more than tread. If it is gravel, mud and a job site, the lug sole earns itself back.
