The Burnham comes in Dusty Tan, an oil snuff suede with a soft, weathered cast — the shade of a boot that looks like a favourite before the first month is out. Oil snuff suede takes light differently from plain nap: richer in the creases, hazier on the surface, alive in a way smooth leather is not. The chelsea construction around it is all business. Elastic goring flexes for entry and holds firm after; Goodyear welting stitches the upper to a leather outsole with TPU studs for traction; and the boot can be resoled on that welt for as long as you keep it. A supple glove leather lining runs the full interior, over comfortable shock-absorbing insoles and cork-bed midsoles that form to your feet. This is the casual half of the chelsea spectrum, happiest against faded jeans and off-white. Let it scuff. It improves.
